Super Cup: Belgian domination all the way
Thursday’s CSI2* Super Cup competitions were dominated by the home riders, who showed top form on the opening day of Knokke Hippique’s 2017-edition.
Koen Vereecke won the 1.40m Grand Prix Qualifier presented by Godiva, after producing the fastest of the thirty clear rounds in this class that counted a total of 80 riders. Aboard the 9-year-old mare Ina van de Nieuwburghoeve (Nabab de Reve x Coriano), the Belgian rider stopped the clock at 63.98 seconds. Not too far behind followed Taylor Alexander (USA) riding Ryanair de Riverland (Quick Star x Papillon Rouge) to a time of 64.43 seconds. Then followed Emma Stoker (GBR) on Townhead Campus (Cartoon x Grand Canyon) in third, before two more Belgians again filled up the next two spots with Simon Morssinkhof and Hendrik Denutte finishing fourth and fifth.
Two Belgian girls showed the way in the opening Super Cup class, a 1.35m in two phases presented by BHV: Marthe Van Gorp won aboard Diamond Star (Canturano x Tangelo Vd Zuuthoeve) while Emilie Conter took the second place on Fragile Van 'T Paradijs (Indoctro x Surrealist Van 'T Paradijs) with only 0.50 seconds separating the two riders. Stefanie van den Brink (NED) finished third riding Salt'N Peppa (Stolzenberg x Escudo I), making it an all-female podium.
In the 1.30m ClipMyHorse Prize it was also double Belgian on top, as Gilles Derty took home the victory aboard Dax van de Zandloper (Up Chiqui x Omar) and Laura Mathy finished as runner-up on Ti Pol d'Orchis (Oncle Pol x Elan de La Cour) with almost two seconds separating them in phase two of the competition. Hansueli Sprunger (SUI) ended third aboard Grand Cooper (Lord Z x Berlin).
