Super Cup: Andres Azcarraga makes it a Mexican Grand Prix victory
The CSI2* 1.45m Super Cup Grand Prix KNOKKE-HEIST went to Mexico, as Andres Azcarraga jumped to victory aboard the 11-year-old stallion Contendros 2 (Contendro I x Drosselklang II).
As first to go in the jump-off that counted eight horse-and-rider combinations, Jack Whitaker (GBR) set the pace with a beautiful round on Arlo de Bondel (Dollar Dela Pierre x Kassidi) to stop the clock at 34.35 seconds. Two riders later, Azcarraga managed to better the time with a smooth and fast round crossing the finish line in 34.10 seconds. None of those to come could match Azcarraga, even though they all tried. As last to go Yves Houtackers (NED) went into third place with Vini de Beaufour (Diamant de Semilly x Heartbreaker) with a time of 34.40 seconds. Best for Belgium was Gilles Thomas in fifth place, with a double clear round.
“I just went with my own plan, I could not watch Jack – so I trusted my horse, I know he is fast. I just went for the short turns, and at the end I tried to keep it as smooth as possible but still be quick,” Andres Azcarraga said. “My horse is amazing, I had him since he was six and I have developed him myself.”
“It is my first time showing in Europe, normally I go to Spruce Meadows but this year I came here. It is amazing here, I love the show! I will be staying in Knokke for the next weeks for the summer circuit, before I will do Ascona next,” Azcarraga said.
